Aquaponics

What is Aquaponics?

The whole can be greater than the pieces that put it together. New significance is added to components that was not there when evaluated alone.

Take for example a tomato plant in your backyard. With love and care, wonderful home-grown tomatoes can be the fruits of your labor. Now let's look at aquaculture (farming of fish). With regular maintenance and powerful systems to clean the water, much of the world's fish for sale is produced through aquaculture. The task of keeping aquacultures' water clean is the most difficult part of the process, and often times, irresponsible management of the fish waste is tolerated; this leads to pollution being released into our water systems.

Apart from each other, cultivating plants and raising fish make up much of our agriculture. When flourishing fish and vigorous plants are symbiotic, they take on roles that are not present when farmed alone. The fish waste turns into a vital and extremally effective form of fertilizer. The plants turn into a life support system to maintain crystal clear, pristine water for the fish. Not only are these new roles realized, the fish grow faster, with reduced stress. And the plants are always at their peak growth.
